what is art-in. ?

art-in. is a new initiative set up by artist Emma Rushton in Manchester to support working artists.

Firstly - as an artist run space - it is open to ideas: a potential exhibition or meeting space; a space for discussion; presentation; education; making.

Secondly, as a not-for-profit, art-in. offers artworks made, selected, or commissioned specifically for a place or context and displayed within an inventive framing.

art-in. is here to protest the idea that only an elite can afford to have original, challenging, contemporary art, and engage. with working artists.

Art-in. aims to expand perceptions of what kind of art can be placed within domestic and small commercial spaces - bringing contemporary art that is more than decoration into people’s homes - and challenge the notion that visual art by living artists is only affordable to an elite.

With experience of sourcing unusual materials and novel objects, and knowledge of fabrics and paint, art-in. can put the time in to find second-hand, quality / designer, or unwanted furniture / items at bargain cost - reusing, recycling - to create a ‘frame’ or ‘space’ in which to display the art.

working with individuals in homes, or on projects with galleries, social enterprises, small businesses, community spaces.

art-in. also works with artworks or objects already owned, that have long been looking for a space to be exhibited.

art-in. will consider environmental impact to help protect the future for future generations…. hopefully you will be handing your art down too…

The aim is to enable those with moderate incomes or limited budgets to access and to own imaginative, challenging, considered, thought-provoking, contemporary art,

in interesting spaces.

And to get artists paid.
